The core had arrived warm.
I worked in a polar research laboratory where we stored kilometers of ice drilled from glaciers and continental sheets. Each cylinder was a vertical archive. Dust marked droughts. Sulfate recorded eruptions. Bubbles preserved atmospheres older than our species. Everything stayed at minus thirty-six Celsius from drill site to analysis room.
Core N-114 measured twenty-two degrees.
Sunlight glowed inside it.
The cylinder lay on a black insulated cradle, clear as glass. Deep within its center, a bright point cast shadows across the lab. When I placed my ear near the surface, I heard insects, wind through leaves, and children splashing in shallow water. The core smelled of hot grass and sunscreen.
Outside, the station endured four months of polar night.
Dr. Rahal checked the drilling log. N-114 came from 3,106 meters below the ice, a layer approximately four hundred thousand years old. The field team had found it beneath undisturbed strata. Their notes mentioned impossible heat at the drill head and condensation rising instead of falling. The final entry read: SOMETHING KNOCKING UPWARD.
We ran the core through a scanner.
The image did not show bubbles or sediment. It showed a landscape.
A narrow lake filled the cylinder's center. Green hills curved around it. Tiny people stood on a beach beneath a yellow sun. The scanner magnified them without losing detail. We saw towels, baskets, bare feet, faces turned upward. Their clothing belonged to no consistent period. One woman wore animal hides. A boy wore a striped modern swimsuit. A man in a field parka stood waist-deep in the lake.
His parka bore our station logo.
The scanner operator, Mika, recognized him as her brother Tomas, a driller who had vanished during an expedition six years earlier. His body was never found.
Tomas looked through the scanner and waved.
Mika touched the ice. The miniature sun brightened. A wet fingerprint appeared on the inside surface directly beneath her hand.
“Can you hear me?” she asked.
Her brother's voice came from a bubble near the core's base.
“It's summer here.”
Dr. Rahal ordered everyone back. The trapped people began shouting at once. Their voices rose through separate bubbles, overlapping pleas in languages our software could not identify. Tomas remained clear.
“Let it melt,” he said. “We'll come out with the water.”
The core's temperature climbed to twenty-five degrees. It should have collapsed into liquid. Instead, frost formed on our equipment while the cylinder stayed solid and warm. Heat was not entering the lab. Cold was flowing into the core from us.
Mika's fingertip turned white where she had touched it.
Inside the landscape, snow began falling.
The tiny people looked up in terror. Ice spread across their lake. Leaves browned and dropped. The sun dimmed. They had lived in an endless summer until we removed warmth from their world.
Tomas pounded against the inner surface. Each strike shook our floor.
“You're freezing us,” he shouted.
Mika reached for the freezer controls. Dr. Rahal stopped her. They struggled. Her palm struck the emergency defrost switch.
Warm air poured into the room.
A crack opened along N-114.
The scream came out first. Then birds. Hundreds burst from a fracture no wider than a hair, expanding from microscopic specks into full-sized animals as they entered the lab. They were not species I knew. Their feathers were transparent and their eyes contained black snow. They struck walls, vents, and people. Where their wings touched metal, summer grass sprouted and withered in seconds.
Dr. Rahal restored the cold. The crack sealed, cutting one bird in half. Its body collapsed into slush older than humanity.
Mika vanished.
Her clothes lay beside the cradle, warm and damp. Inside the ice, she stood next to Tomas on the beach. He embraced her. She looked relieved until the snow reached their knees.
The trapped world had taken her through skin contact. It was not preserving missing people. It was collecting anyone who wanted refuge from cold, grief, or time. Each person carried memories of summer inside, adding heat and detail to the landscape.
Dr. Rahal said the core must be destroyed without thawing. We loaded it into a dry shipping cask and flooded the chamber with liquid nitrogen. The temperature dropped below minus one hundred. Inside, the lake froze solid. People fell. The miniature sun contracted to a red dot.
But N-114 expanded.
Ancient ice grew from its ends, pushing through the cask. Frost raced across the floor and climbed the walls. The laboratory windows whitened from inside. Beyond them, the polar night changed. A pale beach appeared beneath the station, visible through kilometers of transparent ice. Tiny people looked upward from impossible depth.
Every stored core began glowing.
Summer landscapes appeared inside cylinders drilled from Antarctica, Greenland, mountain glaciers, and sea ice. Different lakes, fields, forests—all connected beneath the frozen layers. Voices traveled through the freezer racks. Missing researchers called to us from cores collected before they were born.
The ice was not an archive of climate.
It was a surface stretched above someplace warm.
Every drilling project had made a pinhole. Every thawing sample had let that place look through.
The lights failed. Emergency lamps turned the frost red. Cracks formed across the floor in a circle around N-114. Heat breathed upward. Snow outside lifted from the ground and vanished into the fractures. Our coats stiffened as warmth drained from our bodies.
Beneath the ice, the red sun grew.
Dr. Rahal and I dragged the core toward the deep disposal shaft used for contaminated samples. Tomas and Mika followed us inside the cylinder, walking along their frozen beach. Their voices moved through pipes and walls.
“It doesn't have winter,” Mika said. “You're bringing winter here.”
At the shaft, we opened the hatch. Cold darkness descended four hundred meters into bedrock. If the core reached rock, perhaps it would lose contact with the ice sheet.
Tomas pressed his face against the cylinder.
“Please,” he said. “Don't bury us again.”
Dr. Rahal hesitated.
The sun inside N-114 opened an eye.
Its pupil narrowed on him. Every trapped person turned simultaneously, mouths stretching in smiles. They had never been begging us to save them. The voices belonged to the place itself, sampled from those it had absorbed.
“Let me melt,” they said together.
I shoved the cask into the shaft.
The core fell, glowing smaller and smaller. From far below came a sound like ice breaking across an ocean. The frost stopped spreading. Stored cores went dark. The transparent beach beneath the station vanished.
Dr. Rahal and I were evacuated. The official report blamed a refrigerant leak and sensory effects from hypothermia. Core N-114 was listed as lost in transit. Mika's disappearance remains unexplained.
The station was abandoned, but satellite images now show a circular patch of green surrounding it. The circle doubles in size each month. Researchers say geothermal activity is melting the ice from below.
Last week, spring water began flowing from my kitchen faucet warm enough to steam. It smells like hot grass and sunscreen. If I hold a glass to the light, I can see a tiny beach suspended inside.
Mika stands there with Tomas.
They point behind me whenever I look.
Tonight, frost covered every window in my apartment except one round spot. Through it, the summer sun is shining.
Something on the other side has put its eye to the glass.
It keeps asking me to turn up the heat.
