The archetypal lake cryptid. Surface accounts describe one to three smooth humps, a long neck raised periscope-fashion, and a wake inconsistent with vessels or known wildlife. The loch's peat-stained water — visibility under three meters — has frustrated every photographic effort since the (now-discredited) 1934 'Surgeon's Photograph.'
Sonar remains the serious evidence class: Operation Deepscan (1987) and several independent surveys registered large, moving mid-water contacts that were never identified. A 2018 environmental-DNA survey of the loch found no reptilian sequences but an unexplained abundance of eel DNA, reviving the giant-eel hypothesis.
The archive lists the case as historical but unresolved: the loch connects to the sea, and whatever visits it may not live there.
