The Philippines' most famous roadside ghost. A woman in a long white dress, black hair over her face, who appears in the back seats of cars traveling Balete Drive after midnight — visible in the rearview mirror, gone when the driver turns around.
The street is lined with old balete trees, which in Filipino tradition are doorways: dwelling places for spirits and the reason the drive was already regarded as thin ground before the first sighting. Taxi drivers in Quezon City still decline the route at night, or hang rosaries from the mirror and keep a passenger in the front seat, never the back.
The standing pattern: she appears to drivers traveling alone, in the stretch between España extension and N. Domingo. Some accounts add a knock on the roof; a few describe her standing in the road ahead, unmoving, at the exact spot the mirror sighting occurred.
